Artisan — a word for one whose skill is beyond question, yet who never quite reaches the essence of art. At times, it has even been spoken with a note of condescension.

And yet it is a word we would quietly take as our own.

Because no one can create nature. The swell of the wood, the wavering of its grain, the patterns carved by years of wind and snow — not one of them is ours. All we can do is find the beauty already there, draw it out with all the skill we have, and shape it into something that reaches your hand.

Art begins from nothing at all. But Tsuzuriya does not bring things into being. Standing before nature, which we will never surpass, we would rather remain nothing more than artisans. So let the word stand. It is, in truth, what we hope to be.

If our other collections are time spent descending into stillness, Artisan is an attempt to carry the movement of nature, just as it is, into the palm of your hand. Its wildness, its strength, the indivisible trace of something alive — we have left them where they are, rather than smoothing them away.

Nature itself can never be held. But if, through this single pen, you were to feel something of its beauty resting in your hand — that is the hope we placed in this collection.
